I have come across a problem in my 1st year of study of the harmonica that i havent firgured out when playing with other guitarist,or even somtimes with my own guitar songs, when recording.I got a feel for the 1-4-5 blues progression and if i know the key all is good. Not that i sound real good but a know the basic struture of where the song is heading 12 bars key of E for example,But with most my friends songs amd a lot of mine there not standard 1-4-5 progressions,Like tonight i was playing with a friend i hadnt seen in awhile,And he really has gotten pretty good on the guitar, but like most my guitar playing friends, there songs are more modern rock and dont follow the 1-4-5 and they dont know what key its in,I play some guitar and try to firgure out what key there in but there using a lot of different chords,im tha basic 1st postion or standard Bar chord fellow, but this friend of mine was playing some finguring that if i could spend some time i could firgur out but we on the spot ready set go,I know you can test harps by drawing in on the 2 hole draw and thats what i did but for me sometimes i might feel like 2 or 3 might work by the time i firgure it out well the songs allmost over. But i firgure i can deal with that with time,my question is when a song is not a 1-4-5 blues but more like a modern acoustic rock how do you firgure out the pattern quick is there a set guide kinda like the blues,I struggled all night with his modern stuff i played one blues song and it feel right together, but harp would sound good on some of his songs if i could firgure out the progression for modern acoustic rock, the last band i was in i had the same situation,on a lot of my guitar songs the same,Also i have a chart with the 3 main keys for a key on my harp box, like E=E,A,B but im starting to notice on these modern acoustic rock songs that there using other chords than the 3 main ones for a key its confussing me any help would be greatly appreaciated

Are you familiar with the different harp positions? Depending on the song style, some harp positions can sound more natural than others. There are three basic positions a new player should know:
the root key (eg C on an C harp, the Oh Susanna! position), second position (G on a C harp, the classic blues position) and third position (D(minor-ish feel, or Dorian mode)on a C harp).
For typical three-chord trick rock songs, 4th position is a good one to try (A(minor-ish, Aeolian mode) on a C harp) - although in this position the A root note is a draw bend.

yea i familar with the1,2,3 im not with 4 th,when i get into these situations it does seem like im using 3rd as much as 2nd but in the same song lol when i am not familar with the tune and its not a 12 bar blues i go with my ear and hope i picked up the right harp cause ill find a root note or another on that sounds like it might work and noodle around with it some but because the change is going to be something other than a standard 12 bar change i have to repeat it on the next change and i would like to not noodle so much, given theses are 1st time jams not worked out songs, but was wondering if there was a basic modern rock pattern with the 1-4-5 that is different than the blues 12 pattern

It sounds like your shit is very together - no, there isn't a standard rock pattern.
