This is a little off the subject of harmonica as Alex Chilton was not a harmonica player but there was a recent thread on white blues singers. Alex didn't fall in exactly the blues catagory but he was a great R&B and Soul singer as well a rock singer. The song "The Letter" was one my favorite records in my youth back in the 1960s and Chilton was only 16 when he recorded that song with The Box Tops. They had other great records as well such as 'Soul Deep". Alex was scheduled to perform this week with his band Big Star at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin when he died suddenly of a heart attack. The Memphis music scene and Ardent studios won't be the same without him.
