Okay, here goes one of those subjective questions. What is the best mic to use to get that chicago sound? Does anyone own a Ruskin 4+ and if so do you like it? Would you recommend it or would you recommend a different mic?

I like my custom wood mic with a black label CR. Stealth volume control on rear of mic. Much lighter weight than a metal bullet. Made by some fly-by-night outfit called BlowsMeAway Productions.

Best harp mic I've ever used is the 545 Ultimate I got from that fly-by-night outfit called Blows Me Away Productions. More versatile than a bullet mic.

I'm with Greg - a real sweet black label CR is the way to go. I like mine in a 707A shell. I like the size and shape for those Cotton wah-wahs.

i have a ruskin with crystal, built into a motorcycle turn signal housing. light and sweet, chrome for days. love it! also have a customized by the fly by night guy e-v m43u mic, small, solid, and very punchy. greg put an internal tranny in it for hi-z, along with an internal volume pot and a screw on connector. nice! a shure 707a shell with 99b86 element, kicks butt. shure 545s, needs some tlc.
that's more than i need to gig.
also have a nady/bushman torpedo which is ok into a p.a. but just doesn't hold up to a high z mic and a tube amp at all.
occasionally i plug a sm57 into a p.a. works pretty well. or the 545, also works well in a p.a.

I'm pretty happy using any mic to play through. However given a choice it's usually a bullet mic of some description.
My favourites for gigging are Astatic T-3 with CM 99A86, Astatic JT30 with either CM 99A86 or MC101, Astatic Biscuit with MC151, Shure 520 with CM 99A86.
I love stick mics too, like the Shure 545 and Ev RE10 but I don't find them as comfortable to hold as a bullet mic.

I have 2-3 mics I use depending on the amp. Right now using the Bogen amps I'm real happy with my American Bullet (Salt shaker) D-4T that was setup with new transformer and vol control by our friend Dave Wren AKA Technobird. Besides this I like My small shell Shure Bullet with the American CM white Label and the Sonatone ceramic stick mic. ----------

thanks for all the input guys. It seems as though the shure sm57 is an affordable option for me to get started with a mic. I dont want to spend the money on a custom right now until I experiment a bit. Can i plug a sm 57 directly into my HG2? Let me know and thanks again for everyones input.

Littleeasy. To plug directly into an amp it has to be high impedance mic.
If it is low impedance, like the SM57, you'll need an impedance matching transformer.
You can get these online. Shure make them, but there are cheaper ones available.
Low impedance mics are for plugging directly into the PA. ---------- The Harpist formerly known as Doggycam

this is a shure 515 done up by SUKM. ron did a great job. he calls this one the GhostRyder. naming them gives him inspiration. he "hotrods the mics (dont ask me what that means.) it plays clean but when you cup it, it growls!! and his prices are very good. i found this guy thru jon.

at the moment i use a a mexican shure 520d with its original cm element through a '66 fender super reverb or a vibrolux, back up i have a little shaker dynamic, the bullet doesn't feedback and i usually get some good sounds with it, and it only cost me £40 from my amp repair man! you can spend as much as you like , but it won't make you a better player only a more skint one with the mrs on your trail! sounds like a good idea for a blues song actually lol!

I use a samson r21 cut down to reduce weight and with the ball flattened to within about 3/8 inch of the element. I also run it wireless and that may vary the tone if you decide to do it. Until yesterday, the chicago tone eluded me, but I found it in my digitech modeling pedal.
I always explore all avenues via the gear i already own before buying more. I am only buying new speakers so i can put another amp back together with the ones i stole from it.
The samson r21 is similar in performance to an sm57, from what i've heard on youtube clips of the 57.
