Has anyone tried the reconditioned elements from "Hamsammich" on ebay? If so what are your opinions on them compared to say a standard Shure 99A86 CM element?

I have not from that seller but bought a 99a86 from e-tronicsurplus that works well, shipped quick and packed nicely. They put one up at a time so if you don't get the first, keep trying. There's one up now, 2 days left, $60.

Oops sorry Greg. His username is "hamsammich12" Oisin - Thanks for posting the link.
Here's the one to his elements: Hamsammich12
To be honest I'm a little dubious about his claims. Maybe he can do what he claim and maybe the elements do sound great. I don't know. That's why I'm asking. I'd like to know more before I consider buying from him.

The 1st vidio he says that was his 25th element he has rewound thats a bit of a BEWARE signe i would say
the vidio was painful and funny all at the same time i watched a few more of his vids enough said
the 2 badfeebacks enough said ( Sonnyjr23 ) yes it is the real Sonnyjr
what will you get a rewound vintage low-z element i think by striping the old wire of and rewinding it with new wire i would think strip it of it's vintage value
i think rewinding the element it would allso have a dramatic effect on it's original tone what do you really get it can't be vintage tone being rewound
for the price he is asking, well i won a vintage 440 Shure Silver Bullet for US $86 bucks if you don't need the shell resell it on Ebay rip the element out
there are many other Shure hand and stand mics that you can shuck out the element for your next project 440 444 go for around 30 6o bucks or the 505 hand mic they have Black Back elements in them some times i will add a link soon

Yeah I think I'll avoid these elements for all the reasons you guys mention.
I only actually need two CM/CR elements for a couple of shells I have (Astatic T3 and an Astatic Biscuit), so I'll check out ebay and see what comes up.
Thanks for all the great advice guys.

Just take a look at the aluminum crimp job on the back side between the two elements he shows side by side,.. I don't think that would pass Shure's inspection,.Something bound to start a rattling inside? With the Black Tape an silver print ,.??? Gotta wonder ,.eh.passin em off as black labels?? ---------- Simply Unique Kustom Mic's By Rharley

Ryan Legge here. That's my video, and yes, I rewind low-z elements with a Hi-Z coil. There are videos supporting the claims that I make, with audio, so you can judge for yourself. I work with many harp players in the San Diego community, and other mic builders as well. As a matter of fact I'm repairing about 20 elements for Johnny Ace right now. I have sold over a hundred of these elements to very happy clients. Now, I never tried to pass them off as CRs, but I did paint the labels black since they were no longer what the original model number identifies. There are variations in them, just as any vintage A/B/H86.... The ones that don't pass the pro player test get scrapped. The negative feedback from Sonny Jr. is a long story that I don't want to get into right now, but if you ask me or if we ever meet and you want to know I'll tell the whole thing. Basically he was expecting to get the equivalent of the best black label CR for $80. He bought 6 (I believe) right away without inquiring (or apparently reading my listing), and was upset with my return policy. I was willing to refund all his money, minus the cost of shipping it back to me, and he became irate over the transaction, and left negative feedback. That incedent was part of the reason why I stopped selling elements on eBay, and only offer my services 'underground'. I'll admit those videos are old, and I don't crimp them the same way anymore...I should probably update them. Anyway, feel free to ask me anything. I'm willing to entertain any questions....even from 'competitor' mic builders. ;-)

Hamsammich...or should I say Ryan Legge! ...good to hear you are back at it. I had done a transaction with you years ago and wasn't all that happy with the results. Long story....you have my best wishes for success.

Hey Mojokane.... Are you in Hawaii? Did I send you an element back in the day? They took so much work that I didn't always have the heart to put them back in the parts collection when the tone wasn't outstanding. Pissed a couple people off (you might have been one), took some time off of repairing elements for other people, but kept at it, and learned just about everything there is to know about CR and CM elements. I'm even working on making some tooling, so I'll be able to repair anything short of a completely smashed element.
