I got a Hohner flex rack and love it. My question is whether it's made to adjust on the fly or if the knobs need to be tightened when an adjustment is made. I had it half tightened and it was easy to adjust, but I worry about grinding the gears.

I really do love the flex rack. I've had an old brace for probably 40 years, but it fit me differently as I grew older. I can't imagine how that happened. Anyway, I couldn't adjust the angle of the harmonica and it was like I had to tilt my head back and blow into the top of the harp past my upper lip. The flex rack lets you adjust all that. It's pricey, about $60, but it looks and feels like a high quality product and you can set whatever position you want.

I checked another forum and contacted Hohner and haven't had any answers. I'm just going to use it semi-tight so it doesn't move around while playing, but it's still loose enough to open it up to put it on or take it off without cranking the knobs. It doesn't seem to be grinding. It's a fraction of the work of tightening and loosening every time you move anything. It might wear out, but I wouldn't have a problem replacing it every so often.

I have a custom rack I use most of the time ---I have the flexrack for back up

1] u may want to put colored tape on the knobs-I lost one and and had to settle for a socket for tightening and loosening

2] I also swapped out the springs-so I could pull it easier to change harps

3] I think it best to get everything set and leave it--
I only adjust the angle where harp is occasionally
I have to take my glasses off, on a break
But yr right plastic gears will wear easily

ps ;
after u get use to being able to adjust the angle that the harp goes in your mouth-u will never be able to go back to a standard rack

standard racks point upward---eliminating tongue blocking
and are just bad----after u get use to your personal angle try standard and u will see what i mean

honestly I cant even play on standard rack anymore --its so frustrating

good luck 'dont loose the knobs'
