I hear you all in regards to a seasoned player being able to make a OOTB harp sound very nice. But if a draw bend note is stuck and unresponsive, its stuck. Nobody is going to get it to play smooth and sweet as it is supposed to until its taken apart and repaired. I've gotten my D Manji 3 draw bend to work now, but it needs more tweaking to get it smooth and effortless. I have NEVER had this much issue with any OOTB SP20, Lee Oskar, Bushman or even Suzuki's Blues Masters. So why is their new and more expensive harp so consistently whacked? I had 3 different D Manji harps with the exact same issue as many others have had with it. And even Suzuki couldn't repair it correctly.

Having said all that, now that I have it playing more effectively, I love the tone and the loudness and the responsiveness of the Manji and will most likely try out a C harp now that they are in stock.

I suspect the reason is the difference between one that works, and one that doesn't is about a bozillionth of and inch, and manufacturers just can't get it that close.

Like Harpwrench said -- if they shipped you a new one, they just set themselves up for chance you'd get another lemon. That said, they didn't have YOU there testing it out, with your mouth and your style, to insure it would work for YOU.

I think the wide range of opinions on this particular harp (or any , really) just build the case better -- there can be bad ones in any lot. The ability to tweak a harp and/or adjust your playing to the harp can get you over the hump, most times.
