Hi All: It is funny how the universe comes together at times. Today I got a compliment from an internet listener on my playing lead guitar and lead harp at the same time on one of my songs. Then this morning I got to recording a few songs with that set up and I check my email and I get this note from an old austin friend with the picture below. I started playing lead harp notes and lead guitar notes in Austin. The scene there was so deep in guitar heros and harp players. I somehow stumbled on doing the lead harp and lead guitar at the same time with my trio. It became pretty popular down there. But since going to the 1 man band, I forgot about it. Here are a couple with the harp on the rack and lead guitar. I think I invented this thing. I haven't heard anone else do it as one person, at the same time.

Niles Fuller is a photographer that took portrait shots of just about anybody who was anybody on the austin scene in the early and mid 80's. The photos are now in the Texas music history museum at UT austin. Today he contacted me about possibly playing the niagra falls bluesfest (he moved there a while back) and sent this picture. It is from 1984 and was used for a t shirt.

My longtime bassist and cofounder of the the word SPONTOBEAT, James "Rock Bottom" Dupree, my wife Judy, and our 63 cadillac Park Ave (used by Dwight Yokum in the video guitar cadillacs).

Thanks Kyzer!

Hobostubs: I took only a compliment from your messages. The one man band has a ton of advantages over a regular band. For 30 years I was pure trio onstage and occasionally dabbled with the 1 man band thing at home. I never thought it would reverse. Now I couldn't see myself playing gigs with real musicians for more than a song or two. That lead harp, lead guitar, at the same time stuff is just one example. When you control the entire sound, the amount of freedom is defined by your limitations. When you play with a band, the amount of freedom is defined by the collective members limitations and that almost universally means everyone agreeing to keeping standard times and chord changes. Without that kaos prevails. When I played with lightning hopkins he would often change at unorthodox times and fluxuate with the speeds of the beats. Most found that very frustrating. I remember one night the back up band complaining he should learn how to keep time. That floored me. I said there are millions of generic players like you in this town (NYC) but only one Lightning! I use to enjoy those changes. You just had to open your soul to it and then you could feel the changes coming. My bassist in the photo above could do that with my unorthodox changes. When he quit, I filled his spot with some world famous bassists, that were great, but I had to follow them. Once I laid down the beat, that was it for the song. In retrospect, I see that was a huge contributor in me going to the 1 man band and yes, you don't have to split wages! I also find I make more per gig in my pocket than when I had a trio. Walter
