Is there any difference between the size of the bodies of these two Shure mics?I was going to by a brand new 520dx,but I see that alot of players say they don't sound very good. These two mics are on ebay right now, both with Hi Z 99a86 shure elements in them. They look dimensionally the same in the pics, so whats the difference? Was it just the original stock elements? I'd like to have a vintage sure, and one of these mics might fit the bill.Any input?

Here's the deal. 520DX is bigger than earlier 520D and 520 shells. Early 707's were even smaller and make really nice shells, although the later 707's are the same diameter as the 520/520D.

The 99A86 CM is a very good element - that's from the 520 era (the later 520D has a 99S556 element, which was "D"ual impedance, element made in Mexico - still better than the 520DX element, but brighter and sharper sounding.

Southbound ,.
The difference dimensionally between the Shure large an small shell's is only around a 1/16 of an inch,.The large shell grille will fit the small shell & Vice/Verse.

1/16" Not a big reason to spend your hard earned money on a vintage small shell,..go for the lesser $$$ 520DX,..pull the tag off,...presto !!! Ya got yourself a 520D as far as anybody knows,..LOL

rharley, the 1/16 does make a difference for me! I own both and i like the smaler version better.
Well, then the DX has a completly different element than earlier 520 versions. It also sounds different. I know players who prefer the DX over the earlier CM/CR elements, but most players go clearly for the older elements. It's now about what anybody knows, but what you want!

Again, thanks guys!! D.H., that link was perfect, read it all!! Very informative.I don't think the difference in dimention will make a difference, as long as the element is good,so I will be going for the lesser priced of the two.that is,if my tax return hits my accnt. before it's gone!HaHa!!
