Other than as a parlor trick, are these positions of any real value if not play a chord change over jazz or something? I can't see where these would be applied to a song other than if you need a note or two of a passing chord...which still seems really out there.

I think you pretty much got it, if you're playing some really complicated jazz you might need those notes.

Makes it tough when your root note is an overblow or overdraw. I say these positions are a novelty or maybe a training exercise.

Yeah...I am trying to find songs we play where I can use different positions to help my woodshedding, and 7-10 have been officially taken off the list. Lol.

We don't play much major stuff, so it gets tricky to use 1, 2, 11, and 12 a lot for that....but 4, 5, and 6 shouldn't be bad. I might even do some 1st position blues live now. I play that way all the time at home anyways...

Why not use 11th for non-major? Just bend down the four draw and always bend the six draw (this gets you the flat third and the flat seventh).

Very true...mostly because I like playing third so much!

Good, 1-6th & 11-12th is plenty intimidating :) . I can't run a search cause Im not on my computer but I believe Buddha posted a basic theory of a genre use for each key a while back. I seem to remember 7th-10th being Asian & world music or something. I'll see if I can find it later.
