just got the jt-30 today. the shell is in really nice condition. the paint job looks like wrinkled foil an it has a nice thick clear coat over it. the tag is mint too. the mic does work but its EXTREAMLY weak so i def need to get an element for it. now i only have to decide which one to buy. oh an i have anouther jt-30 coming also. i think i have an addiction. the brown spots is just dirt or something it cleaned right off.

I bought the same one yrs. back at an antique shop with a stand for $25.Its the original paint, the same as yours ,and the element a crystal was shot and sounded like a salt shaker.I removed it of course and loaded it with a black label that a friend got me for a couple of lessons.I wouldn,t take any $$ off of him but when he brought me the B/L I couldn,t turn him down.Bottom Line:Babys Got Back!

Hey Jon....I have the same affliction....I just picked up a electrovoice 664...said to have been used by Mohammad Ali in a radio interview in PA. I'd like to get it chopped like yours....but I don't remember who did the work. ????? ---------- Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. When that jt30 was made it looks like they were expected to survive all out nuclear war. It looks a real toughie and made to last for centuries. ----------

"but I don't remember who did the work. ?????"
im not positive. i got it from ron sunshine an almost all his mics are worked on by chuck gurney. so i assume it could have been him.
thats a cool history for your mic though. mine was owned by a janitor named ike. ----------

Finding those older crystals still in good condition is getting harder and harder to find and those cheap, crappy Kobitones made in Japan being used on the newer Blues Blasters are just flat out horrible. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Only a fool would buy that! For the same money or less, you could get a good harp mic and an amp!

BBQ Bob, I played one of those Hohner Blues Blasters last Sunday. Man, it was dreadful! REALLY nasty tone, and I don't mean that in a good way. The problem was, the guy who owned it handed it to me and said, "Tell me what you think." After playing for a while I had to think of a polite way to tell him it was a POS. I couldn't think of anything nice to say about the mic at all. ---------- -Rick Davis Blues Harp Amps Blog Roadhouse Joe Blues Band

The casting quality of those new ones aren't particularly good either.
These days $150 for a real MC-151 crystal isn't bad, considering that any of the old CR cartridges whenever they're on Ebay and in good condition are often $250++. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

If I were you jon and you want a crystal, then I'd send an email to the bloke at front and centre mics and see if he'll sell you an element. I think I read somewhere that it's a nos with no markings on it and sounds great.

@ Rick:
I had a BB...it was my first harp mic. I then put in a CM....what a difference. The element I took out was very thin / lightweight...piece of crap. Now I'm like Jon...a collector LOL....I picked up a 664 and an old sure PE66L (precursor to the SM57)that I hope to have "refurbished". ---------- Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. pharpo- I started out playing through vocal mics for a few years. My first "harp" mic was an Astatic JT-30 I bought at Elderly Instruments in Lansing MI in 1980. I think it cost like 80 bucks. I lost it somewhere in the 90s with I was drunk.
Right now I have like ONE good harp mic, a Greg Huemann modified Peavey Cherry Bomb bullet mic with Shure CM element. It is radically hot.
I've owned lots of harp mics, but I like selling gear so I can buy more. I ordered a mic from Front and Center and it should arrive tomorrow. I'll let everybody know how it sounds. I reviewed F&C mics on my blog (link below) and REALLY liked them, so I ordered one for myself.

Nice collection. Whats that thing that looks like a chopped off 638? Is it modified? I know there's a similar model 719, but that still looks slightly different...

Nice looking mics Jon.
My collection consists currently of 2 x JT30's (one CM,one crystal), 2 x T3's (both with CM's), Astatic Biscuit (crystal), Shure 520, 4 x Shure 545's, 2 x Shure 540S, Ev RE10, 3 old ribbon mics, SM58. I sold off quite a few over the years. I guess all in all over the last 15 years I've had maybe 100 or more mics. It's quite addictive and a lot cheaper than buying amps.
