Hi all.

I am planning to replace the comb on my Seydel Favorite High G with the thinner (5.2mm) Noble High comb. I will keep the stock Favorite covers. Will the stock cover screws still work with the thinner comb? Or will I need to buy shorter screws?

I guess the reedplate screws will be OK, just sticking out further on the other side.

Thanks for any advice/knowledge on this...

No mention of using different screws on the Seydel website. so standard screws must work.

Just measured Session steel comb outside lip is 8mm inset is 6.5/7mm. so you only need 1.8mm extra thread space. It should work

Thanks Dai.

This worked out fine in the end. I ordered the slim Noble comb from Seydel. It arrived in 3 days, and worked perfectly with the original screws, covers, and reedplates from my High G Favorite. The reedplate screws stick out a bit more, but still do not extend too close to the covers. The Favorite cover screws worked fine with the thinner sandwich.

The slim comb is 5.2mm thick, versus the standard comb which is 6.2mm thick, according to Seydel's website. As expected, the holes are vertically smaller, and the whole sandwich is slightly less tall. This changes your embouchure to have a more closed mouth, which is needed for the high reeds. The harp now plays more responsively, and the occasional squealing I had experienced is now gone. This is proving to be especially practical, since I often switch between a regular G and a high G in the same song, when playing live. Having this thin comb on the high G forces me to close my mouth more, attacking the high G harp differently than I had played the regular G just seconds before. So now the switching between the two harps is really smooth and seamless.

The slim Noble comb is very well finished, and very flat. It is really high quality.

I am now re-using the aluminium Favorite comb with a set of 1847 reedplates in D, with full-length Session-style 1847 covers. Sweet!
