Can anybody give me a hard argument for the value or non-value of a compressor in the pedal chain for the amplified harmonica?

I now see that some brands come really inexpensive (e.g. Behringer, unsurprisingly), but, basically, do I need that pedal? (I´ve got a few already, mostly the usual suspects*.)

The samples I´ve seen from Youtube have not been convincing either way, probably/possibly depending on the quality of the recording gear.
Some compressors appear to promise "sustain" as well as "compression", but I´m not really sure what that entails?

Cheers,
Martin

I tried one for harp---Could never adjust to it----I had more feedback----
In terms of volume it[makes quiet places louder and louder places quieter].
The way I hold the mic, I was losing my high end playing, because mic was primarily heavily cupped for 1-6. I worked very hard at playing both ends, smoothly. Volume dropped when it reached the high end and it was lost in the mix.

I tried 2 compressors---don't want to say brands. It just seemed go make more feedback.. I lost dynamics, because everything being equaled.

This only applies to me. On guitar or Harp, I've never been able to get added sustain without aloss of dynamics.

Again thats just me

Try one, save the box etc see what u think

hoped this helped

I settle on;

For leads I use BBE SONIC STOMP with high end up. I also move mic and or harp to high end---

This helps but I really wish I could just keep playing and the high end wouldn't drop. It drops less with BBE Sonic but still drops
Nonetheless I've never been able to get a compressor to work for me other than in mixing for recording.

This all is just me---some people swaer by them

Yes, snowman, it helped indeed. If there´s one thing that´s not on my wishing list, it´s feedback.
Also, I´ve never really understood that part of "making quiet parts louder" and vice versa. One would think that that´s a decision I should make for myself in my playing -- but I´ve always taken it as containing some deeper truth.

You have certainly tempered my need for a compressor, and for now I´ll save my money for other effects.
Many thanks for the input.
