I was at a house party recently just jamming and singing with some friends. One of my friends told me about this movie – more of a documentary – called “Searching for Sugar Man”. He insisted that I watch it. Made me promise I would. So, I did. And now I am insisting that you watch it. It is available on Amazon Prime or you can rent it on YouTube. I won’t spoil it for you by telling you about it. You’ll just have to trust me.

I was interested to see the story from a South African perspective.
There’s an Australian parallel, but I don’t think any mention of that in the film. In the mid 80s I had his 2 albums plus a 3rd which was a compilation, which was kind of the first Australian specific release in response to the demand evident by the home made cassette phenomenon. I think it was a DJ on 2JJ who started playing the record on air, around 1975. It wasn’t available to buy but people managed to get recordings on cassettes.
So ‘at his best’ was the album everyone had first, then ‘cold fact’ became available a little after, along with ‘coming from reality’. The success of these albums prompted a search and the artist was located and brought to Australia for some concerts. There’s a recording from the Sydney concert I think. I had that too. I can’t quite remember the year of those shows but would have been ‘79 and ‘81 i think.
None of that stuff is mentioned in the film, which is totally about the SA experience, having been quite cut off throughout that period
