Does anyone out there know if Paul Delay was exclusively a tongue block player or did he mix and match occasional pucker technique like Kim Wilson does.

He mixed and matched both techniques....about 75% single note/25% TB. He used TB to leap octaves or more than an octave, getting around the harmonica quickly, and not so much for that note/chord sound....

I think its more like he tongue blocked 75% of the time. Watch how he held the harp against his mouth. Besides, he exclusively used stock Big Rivers. Those things leak like the dickens. You have to tongue block to get a seal.

That’s a great observation.

Pluto: I became a friend of Paul back in the 90's, so what I posted was directly "from the horse's mouth", so to speak...

Hi Ice
I too am from Portland and knew DeLay for many years. He's the one who told me to start tongue blocking.

Pluto - good advice from Paul, for sure....however, I still stand by my conversations with him....so, respectfully disagree with your 75% of the time comment. However, since it is hard to verify besides memory now, (unless he also wrote about it during our correspondence when he was in Club Fed and I can find the letter), let's agree to agree that he was a unique and inspirational musician.
