... seems to be the cheapest alternative in the Shure family.
I see a used one for sale at half the retail price and I wonder, is it any good for harmonica -- straight to PA or via amp/pedals etc?

I've been using it for my gigs and I think it is useable for voice, harmonica, acoustic guitar. I plug it into a mixer so there is adjustment of tone controls and reverb.

I had one of those for vocals about 15 years ago. It was definitely not as good a response for vocs as an SM58. It may be ok for harp but an SM57 is a helluva harp mic if the channel is set right. Plenty of clean and clear but can be made to bark like a junkyard dog with tight cup too.

You also may want to look at Shure 585, which is a high z ball/stick mic. I use one with the tube amp but it will go into a p.a. channel as well. Very good mid range. I have gigged all night using one as a harp mic and no complaints. Last I saw they were going for around $40.

I had both mics out today along with the p.a. and tube amp. The SM57 is nice in a p.a. channel. The 585 works in either p.a. or tube amp since the p.a. has hi z capability on 2 channels.

I have a 585 I'd be willing to let go of for a decent deal if you're interested.

Thanks jbone, very kind of you, and I hear you on the 585, but here I was only out on a very tentative bargain hunt, and the 585 is quite a bit pricier -- notwithstanding the troublemsome fact that I live in Sweden ...
Cheers,

Ah I get it! In the States I have gotten 2 585's for very cheap since the don't look like a typical hot bullet shell mic.
Best of success to you in your search!

+1 on the SM57. If I was going to go for something like an SM58 style mic that was new, I would save my money and buy a Beta 58.

Joe, we use two of those Beta 58's for vocals. Top notch! Also a nice mic for cleaner stuff like on chromatic, especially 1st position chromatic.
Incidentally I had the p.a. out along with the tube amps a couple days ago and I wrung out all my mics and switched between p.a. and tube amp on some. We have a switchable channel on the p.a. so I tried the 585's I have in the p.a. and they are very close to the performance of an SM58. They also sound great with a tube amp so pretty versatile. Of course the SM57 is a great harp mic if the channel is set with care and one respects the distance from harp to mic, or judiciously cups on the mic. My dynamic Shaker mic will work in the p.a. and also with an IMT in the tube amp and sounds good. The one I did not try is my EVm43u mic in the p.a. It was a low z and Greg Heuman modded it for me to hi z.
This p.a. is a pretty good one, reverb, feedback suppression, and enough controls to get it right from medium room to outdoor venue. 4 channels means if we had to we could run 2 vocal mics and a harp mic and a guitar through it.

Across the pond, if I needed one mic for harp I'd get an SM57.
