While I still remember how to upload things to YT i decided to press my luck and make another video.

A while ago I picked up a pair of Hohner 365s from John M G. John mentioned he'd never used the G harp even though he had it since 1978 (i think). I don't play a G harp much but i did learn this one in 3rd position and i remembered that i had this backing track so here is me using the G 365 to play another copycat cover.

Dam good! I finally wore my 365 in C out. No idea if it can be saved. I think SBII- Alec Miller- used both C and G 365's in several songs.

great video...….wish could play my chromatics well....when I play them its always in 3rd position, which does not require much bending which is very difficult to do on chromatics

Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Somehow it’s quite nerve wracking (or something) for me getting 1 on 1 up close with a camera like this.

Old Hickory, thanks for same with the Juke clip too. I’ve been using it to open the show. It’s still something of an attention-grabbing number, nearly 70 years after it was released.

Jbone, the 365 uses reeds which are found in some of the chromatic lines I think. It’s been a while since I measured up but iirc I found some exact matches for slots in a CX12.
I’m sure you could get it repaired. I’ve used reeds from slot 9 Lee Oskar diatonic to replace reeds from hole 11 in 365, although they needed a slight trim for length. Worked well for a long time.

Yes I know SBW2 used the Low C 364 or 365. Didn’t know about the G but I’m thinking these are probably louder than a 10 hole MB for 1 thing. It took me a little to get used to it but no biggie really. It’s kinda why I hold it against my cheek though, to help me keep my place without having to look at the holes.

Hi, George. Thanks, that’s a good observation about the chromatic actually. I’ve been playing chromatics more over the last year and that probably makes the 365 less of an unusual jump than when I first got them. Bending the chromatic is a little different maybe than on a diatonic but it’s just something that requires the right approach. It’s basically the same as bending the valved harps such as P T Gazell and Brendan Power have done so well. It’s easy to try too hard (either too much force or too much movement) and then they choke.

Had a "JJ. Cale" "Mose Alison" feel on harp and singing. I dug it

Thanks, Mr Snow. I should listen to more Mose Allison. JJ Cale was very popular around where I grew up back in the late 70s, I used to hear his records a lot when I started going out socialising as a young adult/mature child

Thanks, Sarge, and, John, and thanks, John, for the harps too. They’re in such lovely condition I felt I really needed to find a way to make use of them.
Of course, there’s nothing here can’t be done on a standard 10 hole but I think the big slots and reeds perhaps have a bit more punch. For all I know, Mr Wells may have even used on to make his record.

What I liked about the 365 is that low end. Best when it's amped or in the p.a. to hear the low end quality.

I have an old Hering 5148 chromatic in the lower octave that is also a nice harp. It's been repaired once so far and at about 10 years old I think it's a good harp.

I have a Manji low C which is seeing some use and the Manji in low D is about to go out for repair as well. I have a new set of plates for my Manji in low F. Life is good.

Yeah the Low C 365 when you get it chugging is a unique sound. Well, maybe not unique exactly. I have a Low C Solist 12 which is similar but I haven’t made much use of it due to it having that so called “Easy 3rd” tuning. Paul Lamb used the same harp for his ‘Summertyne’ song.
I just need to learn how to use my Low C to good effect. I don’t know if people usually bend the low end or if they work around that, but I struggle to bend the Low harps from D on down. I can just about manage a Low Eb

Since it is unlikely I would ever make it to one of your gigs down under, I really appreciate your posts of videos.

Nice job playing and singing!

Thank you all sincerely, for taking the time to watch and comment.
Ted, I appreciate your comment. I’m in awe of your playing skill.
Robert, I’m glad you got a kick out of it. I think I may have tried it in 1st position at some time also. I don’t remember very clearly but it was quite good I think.
Graeme, I appreciate you’re comment. Thank you.
Doug, I guess that’s true. I do maintain a hope to be able to visit the USA again though so maybe I’ll be able to attend a show where you’re playing?
Paul, thanks for watching. I appreciate you already saw the Facebook post too.

Juke is one thing, but a video like this feels very ‘exposed’. Just my naked face and voice I suppose.
I took my specs off so I wouldn’t be looking down my nose all the time. If there was an aesthetic improvement, I’m afraid it was very slight.
I truly am grateful for all the response to these videos. 12 months ago I was faced with taking front of the band 100% if it was to continue. This basically doubled the amount of singing I do, and the need to learn new songs has me listening and playing more. It’s more demanding than I anticipated but probably stimulating some growth I hope.
I enjoyed this song from Jr Wells’ recording. Jon Atkinson recorded it a few years ago too. It goes back well before Jr Wells though and several earlier recordings with variety on the lyrics.
The backing track is called ‘dog bone’ and made by Shoji Naito. Follows the structure of Jr Wells single very closely. Maybe hard to obtain these days

Doing all the vocals will surely make you grow! I hope you are doing warmups and singing from the right place. I did some damage to my vocal cords years ago before I learned my lesson. Nothing permanent but I was not allowed to sing or even talk loud for over 3 months. Torture for a blabbermouth like me! Out live it appears from the other vids you posted that the band is really with you and not playing over you. I struggled with that for years. The duo with Jolene is working very well that way. Very seldom do I feel the strain after even a 3 set gig. We just don't crank too loud.

So are you doing tongue block on this song?

Hi Jbone. Tongue block is the only way I can play at the moment.

I’m generally pretty good with singing but I do need to remind myself to get out of my head sometimes...err, that doesn’t sound quite right but you know what I’m saying. It does help that the band are respectful of the vocal and that the music style encourages that.
When I was a youngster, I would regularly be hoarse after the 3rd song. Never had enough monitor, band always outrageously loud. Consequently, through being unable to hear, I was usually pitchy as.
And croaky. I gave it up for 20 years.

If you have that great backup you can focus on dynamics and let the band and the gear get your sound out. Then the magic can happen.
I do a mix of TB and lip purse.
I for one am glad you got back in front of a band and a mic!
