I have a student who was just given an old Chrometta 12 that was owned by his grandfather. It's a bit warn and dirty but he is interested in trying to clean it up and possibly play it. It plays marginally but the slide is sticky. The valves seem pretty good, but they are at least 50 years old. I know the Chrometta was - and still is, I think - a less expensive chromatic. Any advice?

It seems that the reed plates are held on by nails. Can they be pried off?

Maybe this should just be a keepsake from his grandfather, but if it could be made playable, it would be nice.

Thanks.

I began on Chromettas. Good players but not real durable. I'd agree with you Tom, he needs to put that one away and get a fresh one. Very easy to play. Good sound.
