A few weeks ago, Wheel put up a cover of a Carey Bell number and it spawned some discussion about versions and ‘better’ etc.
One of the examples was a comparison of versions of Sloppy Drunk, respectively John Lee Williamson’s and Jimmy Rogers’.

I picked up on the JLW version a couple decades ago thanks to the coverage given it in Tony Glover’s Blues Harp book.

Some time later I sat down with a recording and carefully copied the intro.
Since then I’ve gone on to play it in a couple of different groups and I always have played the John Lee Williamson approach.

Almost every time I hear other people covering the song, they take the Jimmy Rogers approach and I do understand why. I have often thought I should learn to do it that way too.

So now I am beginning the process.
I expect this is gonna take a little while because I have quite a long history with the habit of doing it otherwise but here we go. I’m listening to the “Chicago Bound” track, and also Kim Wilson on the “Luedella” album.

Good luck SB, I've been trying to copy or least learn some Kim Wilson licks and it's way above my skill level even breaking down 3-4 bars is kicking may butt trying to match the timing, notes & tone not easy He is something else. I've come to conclusion I'll never get there. The other thing I've found in coping licks from songs note foe note is your band needs to get on the same page if I spend hours & hours making a study of a song and then when playing with my band if I'm not hearing the same licks/phrasing/timing it throws me off & I know that's my problem and need to adjust defiantly a work in progress.
