When browsing this forum for posts about repairing reeds, I often see references to something called a "UST," which is apparently some sort of tool for adjusting the gaps between the reed and the side of the slot. I'm embarrassed to say that I have no idea what "UST" stands for. If I search online for "UST," most of the results are for "Underground Storage Tank," but that doesn't seem related to harmonica repair. So I'm just curious how I can have been around for 60 odd years and missed learning the meaning of this term, which seems to be well-known to everyone else on this forum.

I think it was a tool marketed by someone, maybe Dick Sjoberg, and it might stand for Universal Slot Tool. I’m not sure about the S word. Slot, sizing, shaping, sjoberg, scraping,

Try “ultra sizing tool”
Here is a bluesharmonicadotcom forum post (with photos) from Kinya Pollard in which he refers to the tool.

Kinda crossed those posts.
Yeah. Now I’m not clear on the U word. KP did say ‘Ultra’, but he may have made a mistake. I’ve seen it rendered elsewhere as ‘universal’.

It was invented by harp tech Dick Sjoeberg and my understanding is that he called it the Ultimate Sizing Tool.

OK, thanks. I was looking for something to rotate a reed to center it over the slot, but maybe I just need a shim for that.

Reed wrench. You can make one from a used reed plate.

I usually use a reed wrench, but have nudged a reed with shim stock before. Smokey Joe Leone has mentioned using a cigarette rolling paper to align a reed. ----------
