This song was the first one I learned using Adam Gussow’s study material and I will continue to work on it. I am a committed supporter of TAB’s, although many people say that all should be learned by ear in order to be a good harmonica player. What do you think?

What do I think? I think that’s a damn fine effort Maraboy. On a fun but tricky song. And I’ll bet you feel like you improved immensely by learning it. Which is a great feeling indeed. Good on ya!

Thanks Sundancer, but my question "what do you think" did not mean my presentation. My intention was to start a small discussion on TABs. What does the gang here think about them? Are they useful or should everyone learn by ear? I myself am a committed supporter of TABs and have great respect for those who take the trouble to write them, mara.

My opinion is that there's nothing wrong with using tabs. People should use every method available to them to try to achieve what they want to musically. I wouldn't rely upon tabs alone though. As I think it's more beneficial to try and utilise all of the available things out there. Because in the long run it makes you a better player. There most certainly isn't any substitute for really listening to music with good headphones on. Because you hear much more of the nuances of a players style and note choices that way. Have lost count of the amount of times I've thought I had something down. Only to listen with headphones and then realise how far away from it my playing really was. That constant striving for improvement is a big part of the fun of music for me at least.

Using tabs doesn't improve your time, listening does.

Like my amigo SuperBb says - the goal is not just to play the notes the originators played, but to make the sounds they made. Tabs are a useful tool in that process. So is listening and playing along with the original. Tough to do with Crossroads since it isn't a harp sing.

don't let the tools become a crutch.

Always best to use your ears...if you are not developed to that point, tab will show you the way until you develop those ears.

Tab means you spend energy using your eyes to "see" the notes when you should use most of your energy to listen to what you are playing, making corrections as you go.

Don't stop at "tab". Tab is a tool towards a larger goal.
