I'm usually running my own sound but we all have to work with sound people sometimes. What directions do you give that are useful for running harp through the PA?
Feel free to raise hell in your answer but what I'm really looking for is basic strategy because, recently, my strategy didn't work.
Here's my general plan: flat eq, half the monitor of the vocals, no effects and please let me use my mic to address volume/dynamics. He says ok, great. I'm using two pedals and a wireless mic. I set up in about 12 seconds with a 1/4 into the channel he wanted. Soundcheck, ok enough to work with. Song starts and 8/12 bars in it starts to get louder. I didn't want it louder, yet. It was an arms race from that point on - me backing off and him turning up. And me trying not to show my "What the hell...?". Between songs we give a quick request for way less but it's never resolved before our 3 songs are done.
Everyone loved it. Yay. And that's all that really matters. But I know it didn't approach what it could have been. I'll just wait till Monday to complain on MBH. Thanks!

If I bring my quick rig (digital delay, mic, cords, emergency hi/lo converter if needed), I'll just ask for an open channel with 1/4 inch jack if available (and preferable). I'll tell sound man NO EFFECTS, low and mids set at 12:00, turn the Highs down to 9:00. Then I'll have my digital delay volume control at about 1/2 and get a good strong sound check signal. This gives me the ability to boost my volume from the stage if necessary once in the heat of "battle" via the volume on the digital. In regards to monitors, sound man should keep an eye on you - pointing at the monitors in front of you and then giving the thumb up or down (volume up or down) signal works most of the time with a responsible sound man....

If it is direct through a vocal mic, I'll tell him to set everything at 12:00 except for the highs - once again suggesting they be set at 9:00. As to volume, (and leaving the mic on the stand) the sound check will include cupping that vocal mic as well as a close proximity w/out cupping, giving me the ability to control a bit by how close to the mic I play.

In regards to effects on that vocal mic, that's a tough call and I leave it up to the sound man usually....
