Quite spontaneously one would perhaps think that when adding pedals to an amp/PA one starts out with finding the maximum good sound on the amp (EQ, perhaps gain etc), and then add the pedals w/ special adjustments on them.

Another way would perhaps be to set the amp at 12 o´clock (bass, mid, treble) and then go from there with the pedals, and thereby so to speak let them rule.

Any thoughts on this from those of you who use pedals? Do you, for instance, first crank up the bass on the amp, and then crank it up further if you add a pedal with that option?

Yes, and essentially why we use pedals at all is to add or eliminate. But I find that proceeding through the options is a variable nightmare because of how everything wrangles with each other. This is all something I'm pretty bad at. I want good sound and when I like what's happening the experiment is over. Don't do that. Keep messing with it, and carefully tracking one thing at a time. That's especially/giant/completely true if you're using more than one pedal.
And then we always make the most out of what we have.

That´s true, Littoral, it´s a nightmare. I´ve started to take pictures of my pedal/amp/pa settings, but it only goes for that occasion -- next time I connect things it sounds different.
There´s a case to be made for just an amp and a microphone.
