For those in a position to draw comparisons, how would you describe the sound of the Heumann element compared to other well known mics, such as the Shure bullets, sm57s and so on?

Round, rich and full tone. It's got a bigger bottom end that any of the microphones you mentioned. I've played thru several of them in different shells. They are very consistent. If I was in the market for a new microphone, I would contact Greg.

I read the question, looked up, wondering...my first word was round. So put another check beside round. I did some studio work recently and I really liked it straight to the board. Mine is in a JT shell. My other preference would be the bulletized SM57.

I've only experienced it in the Bulletini shell, where it seemed to be similar to the SM57: lots of bottom end when cupped, a similar signal strength and quite a straight timbre (i.e. not very colourful, nasal, mouthy that kind of thing).

I found that the SM57 had more range in sound when open-cupped, but that could about be the housing rather than the element.

I’m thinking about a mic for the chromatic. Not quite sure why I think I might be able to do better than an old Shure Cm etc, in a bullet shell but I’m curious.

I’m quite new at amplified chromatic. Maybe I’m not holding it well.

For Chromatic I'd suggest a Shure 585 or Shure 535, an EV605 or EV630

I do have an unemployed but capable 630. My 605 has a CM element.

I don’t have a lot of comparison data, but I purchased the bulletini specifically to use with a CX12 for a rock-fusion duo I’m in. The mic delivers a great sound, and in its small shell, is very comfortable to hold and cup. I run it through an inexpensive processor with some customized settings for effects, and then into a Bose sound system. I have also played it through a Kalamazoo amp with only some delay, and it sounded great there, also. My other mics are an sm57 and sm Beta58. I don’t use the 57 so much these days, and the 58 is used on a stand.

Interesting thing about the Heumann Element. I have a Turner shell with one and it has a noticeably stronger output than my CR.
I also had a Bulletini . The Bulletini had a much weaker output than either..
Not an issue, but it was noticeable.
Both had a little more bottom than the CR. Both sound great. I also have an Ultimate 57 (Hi-Z).
I switch between them routinely, depending on mood.
No favorites, though the 57 may have a slight edge with chromatic.
I have since sold the Bulletini, due to a hand injury making the smaller size uncomfortable.

The good thing about the Heumann Element is that Greg stand for it. You have a good product and don't worry to carry a vintage mic that can stop running suddenly. With the Heumann Element it the least likely to happen.

For what it's worth my Bulletini sounds very similar to an old probably from the late 1950's early 60's Turner ceramic element I have in a JT 30 housing. I use the Bulletini more because it's better at feedback (loud band syndrome)
