Ok so I play pretty light. Do I want a high gap or a low gap? Seems like a high gap won’t sound unless I play real hard but with a low gap ( on draw three ) I can’t get to a bend not to sound airy and weak. There’s a lot of ppl selling marine bands on face book in my area and I’m picking em up cheap trying to refurbish them for my self.

Welcome to the forum, Ryan!

The simple answer is you probably want your gaps on the lower side, but this is only one element of what can quickly become a very complex discussion.

Gapping is going to affect the response of a given reed, but remember that reeds work in pairs. Three draw bends are mostly occuring on the three blow reed. So you can close the three draw reed all you want, but it won't give you what you're after (non-airy three draw bends).

So, if you haven't already, check the gap on your three blow reed as it is most likely quite high. Try to reduce the gap a little at a time. You said you're working with Marine Bands which are nailed together and so this may prove to be challenging while still assembled, but is doable with some tools.

If you want more detail, let me know. I wanted to keep my response as focused as I could without getting too bogged down.
