Impossible to know. But AFAIK he only recorded once with third position, on "I Don't Know," and he didn't seem particularly comfortable with it. By far the preponderance of his recorded output is in second position, though there are also a handful of recordings in first. =========== Winslow

Yes its interesting, I don’t have many examples of Eb harps used much before late 60s. I’m not sure if they were widely available from the beginning or came along later. Also, not many examples of an Eb in 3rd. Just 2 players in my little sample group; Gary Primich and Sugar Blue

The original recording is in F and he is DEFINITELY using a Bb harp in F. Eb harps weren't around prior to the 60's, according to my buddy and an extremely knowledgeable person when it comes to all things harmonica, and that's Pat Missin. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I thought I’d read that before, thanks Bob. That explains why the earliest use of Eb on my list (not comprehensive by any means but includes over 500 harp-related albums) is probably Butterfield as Groyster noted, on ‘love her with a feeling’ which i think was around 64. Help me was a bit earlier than that but not much. I’m not sure if Eb was available in January 63. There’s a lot of info on pat missin’s site and its time for me to go in to work.

If someone were planning to play this in 3rd on an Eb, I would suggest a Low Eb for the range of the notes. ----------

Doug, I have both Eb's and one song I wrote is in F so I can use them. Eb is a nice sound. ----------
