So yesterday was devoted to staying cool, packing the tote boxes with gear, and a leisurely loadup for the gig at Blue Rose. The time came and we headed over- about 5 minutes from here, right on the Arkansas River. It was seriously humid after some afternoon showers but the folding dolly and straps made the load in as painless as possible.
Ryan, manager at Blue rose, had a space cleared where we were to set up and I got busy and had everything ready to sound check 15 minutes before start time. Ryan is a very nice guy and great manager from what I could see during the evening. He was everywhere, delivering food, barbacking, bussing, and generally doing what needed done all the time. A real dynamo!
We sound checked and relaxed for a few minutes before we started. Staff was nice and friendly and took care of us.
We started off with a Jimmy Reed, speeded up a bit, and Jo sang. It got applause as did most of what we did over 3 sets. A SBII next and we were all in for the set. The place was about half full and we got good response, even one fat tip from a guy who had been dancing around between his appetizer and main course!
The Rose was nice and cool thanks to great A/C. We still worked up a sweat but it was doing what we love, so no big thing.
We continued through set 1 and took a break, then went back to it. Jo's Gibson guitar and her voice were in rare tip top form. My voice and some fresh Hohner MB Deluxes were sounding very good as well. We were 100+ %. Major good vibes going out the amps and PA! The second set was even better than the first since we were now warmed up. Again, good response from the audience and then a well-earned break.
For the third set Jolene got out the old Regal guitar and we did a set of slide stuff, a lot of originals and a few covers. I snuck the volume up a bit since it sounded so GOOD! We blew the place up and had people coming over just to watch the phenomenon of Raw Real Right Now Roots and Blues. Always good to see that connection with the folks!
First set:
Baby What You Want Me To Do?
Bring It On Home To You
Down and Dirty (Orig)
Backwater Blues
Big Boat
Summertime
Katrina Blues (Orig)
Boom Boom Out Go the Lights
Love In Vain

Set 2

Set 3 (Slide)

Roll and Tumble
It went by too fast. At times I was almost not really there, I was in the Zone to where I hardly remember what we were doing, yet I knew we were totally nailing it.
It was over. Time to break down, pack up, load out, get home. Jo went and got us paid and Ryan wants us back in September, maybe at the outdoor stage next door!
Today we are still feeling that glow you get when you do something you love and you know it was a success. After the past 7 or 8 months we were somewhat off balance, between losing the Travel trailer, living in motels, the ill fated trip to Vegas, and finally resettling here in Tulsa and fighting off the flu. It has been an adaptation adventure, but last night we completely got our groove back all the way.
We are very restored and looking for more music adventures nearby, and beginning to plan how to get back on the road next year. Stay tuned.

We are STILL high off the good thing there. When you get in the ZONE it's a kind of spiritual experience.
Thanks guys for the good words.

One sad note, I dropped the p.a. head about a foot when I was loading back into the apartment here and it had to go to the amp hospital today. I found a guy not far away who has done sound repairs for a long time though and he's confident it will be no big thing.

The p.a. is a Yamaha Stage Pass 600i, nice 4 channel with head that clips to the back of one speaker and cables in the back of the other speaker. Came with nice speaker stands too. And a mic I think which we don't use. SM58 clone.
Easy move and setup. Great sound for the duo. One time last summer, just for grins, we left the amps home and did a night singing and playing both guitar and harp through it alone. Which worked but was just pretty dry. I guess if we'd had a few pedals we may have gotten that warm round tone but since we have dream tube amps we just stick to them. for instruments.

The Silvertone 1482's have taken a bit of a beating in the past year and a half and are going strong. Our previous p.a. was a Fender Passport 150 which we got used and it lasted 4 or 5 years with repairs at one point. The Yamaha is more ballsy.

We use Shure Beta 58s for vocals, very good mic.

I've gotten the load in and out down to about 4 trips to the truck including guitars and all. Of course Jolene pitches in where she can!

Hey Jawbone - congratulations to you and Jolene on such a wonderful night. It sounds like all your planets were aligned, and the "magic" happened!

Thanks for sharing the details, and your set list. This is inspiring and motivational for the community.

Rick, the folks here have been with me through some bad times, so it's a no brainer to have some good stuff to pass along!

P.A. head is not going to cost too much to fix. A mount nut fell onto the board and shorted. Our new electronics guy cleaned it up and replaced a fuse.

So we're ready for the next gig, a lunch date at the best BBQ in Tulsa! 2 weeks from today.
