I had the Goon Show on the radio this morning, it went to the spot with Max Geldray playing his amazing chromatic, swing harmonica. I've eulogised about Max before.
I'm thinking to myself, that's amazing: his timing, phrasing, improvisation choices, expressive note shaping - what a musician. This isn't your stock blues harp, this is proper musicianship. But then my wife pulls a face, 'oh dear, that's not very good is it?'
And that's the problem with the harmonica - some people, I have discovered, just don't like the sound of it.
