Curtis has a new all blues CD out, in duo format with Alan Hager. It features more harmonica and some outstanding guitar work by Hager.

There’s a song on his album called “I want my dog to live longer” which has no harp but I challenge anyone to dislike it - sooooo good. And we all agree with the sentiment.

Curtis & Alan are playing the Cadillac Zac show in LongBeach on the 28th. Zac does a great job of bringing in superb harmonica players. In the past year I’ve been able to see Paul Oscher, RJ Mischo, Rick Estrin & Kim Wilson. Looking forward to seeing Curtis Salgado next.

The Monster blues harmonica player/singer that Curtis is was never lost on him....he wanted to become more well known as a singer in R&B/Gospel style and didn't want to detract from this with a lot of harmonica playing on his recordings. (I know this from actual conversations with Curtis in the late 90's).

At SPAH 1999 in St. Louis, during those Golden Years when talent like Curtis would show up just because it was a "cool hang", Curtis did an impromptu show at midnight that was really all blues and it was stunning!

Looking forward to this release myself!

Iceman... I have two VHS tapes with that "Blues Blowoff" (1998) and Curtis Salgado that I purchased from SPAH when they were available after the convention.

Lots of great artists on those two tapes!

Wish I was there !

I look forward to getting Curtis' new CD !

Perhaps SPAH's highest point was 1998 for many reasons....through promotion and building a concept from 1996, this Blues Blowoff event brought in a few hundred folk from the local Detroit area (paying the admission fee) just for this one night, which ballooned the audience greatly from just the attendees...the ballroom was PACKED. Jerry Portnoy and others showed up just for the "hang" and the "buzz". Curtis' set just lit up the room - he did a few gospel numbers that moved the crowd so much that I remember these 3 black ladies returning to the convention on Sunday just to find out if Curtis had any gospel CD's for sale.

You are lucky to own a copy of this event - (I've suggested to SPAH that they transfer this 2 VHS set (and so many other recordings) to DVD and bring them back for sale (a great source of revenue and showcase for harmonica) many times, but no one there seems to be interested in this idea).

Iceman... as I recall, there seemed to be some sort of "copywrite" issue with the SPAH member who filmed the event(s)... may not be an issue today, but who knows ?

Several years ago, I did rip these two VHS tapes down to two MP4 files before my combination VHS and DVD writer/player dies, transferring from VHS to a rewriteable CD, then using Handbrake software on my PC to create the MP4 files, now stored on a hard drive.

May have to edit the different acts out, and post some on YouTube, and see what happens.

AirMojo:

you are referring to the Richard Harris lawsuit, which was regarding videos produced way before the 1998 show - those videos were from the days when SPAH was primarily Chrom/chord/bass convention.

Yes, upload to YouTube.....performances during these shows in 1998 were totally World Class - including back up musicians hired to accompany the acts as well as interact with attendees during the convention. Aside from the Blues Blow Off, there were other amazing performances on other nights - Carlos del Junco, Sunny Girl, Steve Baker, etc...there's even a rare video of me performing on the big stage.....
