at the bottom of the mic, there's a slider. What position is the best. Up or down. I read the tech sheet, but what exactly does it do?

It's a bass roll off switch. A low pass filter. If the switch is down, it's off. Set it it wherever you think it sounds best with your rig for the way you play. I used to use an RE-15 that has the same control. I used to set mine in the up position. But use your ear--there's no right or wrong.
