Anyone know what happened to the Hohner Bluesblaster mic? Out of stock everywhere and not listed on Amazon anymore.

You made me laugh out loud 1847. Now I'm eagerly awaiting an impassioned defence of the Bluesblaster by the same cat who thinks Clarksdale is a little bit of paradise here on earth.

"Are they any good?"- they are ok-but if you get an early model-80's to early 90's- they had the 151 crystal.

I wasn't looking to find one ... just wanted to know what happened.

I mostly refrain from discussing other mics since I own a harmonica microphone business, Bottle 'O Blues, but the Bluesblaster had some problems.

(1) Ceramic element with excessive highs.

(2) XLR cable wired non-standard. I've rewired many of them to use standard XLR to 1/4 inch cables.

Anyway, was just wondering what happened.

The Bluesblaster never used a ceramic element-the newer ones use a smaller Japanese crsytal.

They have been out of production for quite some time.

In the 90's a guy gave me a Blues Blaster. After a few tries I gave it to someone else. Sad thing to do to a perfectly good shell and grill.

You're right jbone. The shells are great. I have one that I put a CM element and rewired the XLR to standard. Its a good looking mic and sounds good too.

They never made a Bluesblaster with a ceramic element.
The newer models used a smaller Japanese element.

Yes, the small Japanese element in the more recent Blues Blaster microphones. I believe them to be small ceramic elements.

@jpmcbride-

From our old buddy Fritz-

They (HOHNER) settled on a medium-format (1 3/8" diameter) crystal made in Japan, using a wider gasket to fit it to the mic's shell. Unfortunately, even raising the resistance of the HBB's volume control from 500K to over 1MEG couldn't put the bottom-end back into the HBB's response curve... OK, in brief: The original large format crystals found in the JT-30's and HBB's could sound scary-BIG when healthy (remember they ARE crystals); The newer medium-sized Japanese crystals sound extremely thin and nasal by comparison.

Good to know tmf714. Whatever they were, they were shrill and had no bottom end at all.
