I'm trying to approximate Charles Neville's sax riff in Congo Square, the one that comes in at 00:23 in this version:

I get close in third position, but am having a total brain fart. Any help, guys?
Thanks in advance.

I hear (in scale degrees) 3b 1 - 7b 5 - 5b - 4 1 - 3b - 1
A bit tricky in the lower register in 3rd. Easy in the upper register
Perhaps 5th might work best?

Great tune! Tricky bends to play that sax line fast in both 3rd and 5th, no? Doable, but tough to play fast consistently. It does lay out pretty clean with mostly draw notes on a C Chromatic with the button pushed in. Riff starts in Eb and resolves an octave lower on Eb, I think?

Bb harp in 3rd 6 dr, 5 dr, 5bl, 4dr(full bend), 4bl, 2dr(full bend), 1dr, 2dr(full bend), 3 bl.
I think you'll find that pretty close. Cheers JG

I don't have great ears but I'm pretty sure that first note is a flat-third ie Eb
The phrase resolves to the fourth than alternates to resolve to the C with a quick 1 - 3b - 1 - 7b - 1
So in 3rd 5d 4d 4b 3d'' 3d''' 2d 1d 2d'' 2d 5d 4d 4b 3d'' 3d''' 2d 1d 2d'' 1d 1b 1d This might work better starting at 9d (on a low Bb?) to avoid that tricky - to me - phrase from the 3 draw full tone to the tone and a half bend.
In 5th, on a Ab harp 6b 5b 4d 3d 3d' 3d'' 2b 2d 3d'' ...probably not much easier
I find this a good exercise for my ears and limited musical theory. Any corrections welcome

What I hear, cross harp on an F harp:
6ob!....6b 5d 4d 4d'4b 3b 3d'.. 4b
repeat 3 more times. Actually, the fourth time through the riff it ends on 4d and repeats a couple of times.
The key move is to jump from 4b to 3b, then head back up the blues scale with 3d' (held slightly longer than the other notes) and 4b.

I think Sensei Kudzu has it right...time to keep woodshedding on that 6OB. So...if tabbed out it would be: Eb-C-Bb-G-F-C-Eb-F (and final go round hit G 4 times)??? The scoop from the Eb to F at the end threw me off, and I keep hearing the third note as an Ab which works but I don't think it's right. It's Bb. Very fun to try and decipher this stuff. If you have a C chrom it's fun to play on that at first so you can hit the flats accurately as you figure it out. Or do it on a keyboard. Most phones you can get a lil' keyboard app now.

Hi Adam, aren't Bb harp in 3rd 6 dr, 5 dr, 5bl, 4dr(full bend), 4bl, 2dr(full bend), 1dr, 2dr(full bend), 3 bl.
And (Using a Low F)
cross harp on an F harp:
6ob!....6b 5d 4d 4d'4b 3b 3d'.. 4b
Exactly the same?
Cheers John
