Here is a link to Rockin' Ron's for the reed plates:

RR's Rocket reed plates

I imagine that almost any of the good techs discussed here at MBH would replace a reed and adjust the other reeds and tuning for a fee. You should check that out and consider the cost including shipping as well as turn around time.

So are the reed plates the same on an older (last 10 years) special 20?

@KC69
From what I have read, the Rocket reed plates are made to closer tolerances than the old Special 20 plates. Additionally, the new Progressive harps use smaller screws on the plates. The Rocket comb may have smaller openings for smaller screws. You should probably do some searching on line to confirm my recollection before you spend money. I think you can put the new plates on old harps if you have the smaller screws, but not visa versa.

I have tried a Rocket, but don't own any. It seemed OK, but pricey, and I am cheap. I have a few MBDs and Crossovers, and a lot of older SP20s, as well as quite a variety of other brands I have explored and use according to my inclinations when I am playing.

See you in WV!

KC69 - there's no need to replace the entire reed plate. Just replace the broken reeds. Harvey can do it. Mike Peace in Tulsa can do it for you.

The Rocket reed plates are the same as Special 20. The new Progressive Series use M1.6 screws. The older SP20 plates use M2.0 screws but they are still interchangable = combs, reeds, covers.

Thanks gentleman; I have some older Sp 20s. I will try switching plates before I send for reed replacement. This is the first Rocket i have tried. I bought used here at the forum and really like it. I still have the same old habit of playing to strong and blowing reeds though!

I agree with almost everything Tom said, but I have a question mark about old sp20 plates fitting a rocket. You would need to drill 2 new holes in the plate to be able to fit a rocket cover plate.
New sp20 and rocket reed plates are identical. But they are different to old sp20 reed plates in 2 regards; the 1.6mm screws as Tom said, and the new plates have the extra drilling for the rocket covers, which are fastened at the front rather than the centre.

Replacing individual reeds is common practice. I replaced 18 last week, sp20s, deluxes, 1896s, and a couple of session steels. It's good value but be aware the reed which broke was the first one. It doesn't mean the others are all good. One of the harps I just mended has had the 5 draw, 4 draw and now 5 blow replaced, all at different times. Still, the owner has had it mended 3 times for total $45 which is cheaper than a new one, and it's been cleaned, tuned and adjusted to play excellently each time (although most of the adjustment happened the first time).

I found the problem with the cover plate holes with an old Sp.20 reed plates. Oh well it gave me a chance to do some modification on the old one once I had it apart. I do like the loudness of the rocket and I think I'll send it out for repair. Thanks again! K.C.
