I understand that throat vibrato is a change in pitch and throat tremolo is change in volume.....the way to achieve this seems pretty close either way.....

Not really. Its similar, but vibrato has the added bending energy.

Here's the thread were it was explained to me. At the beginning of the thread i had no idea there was a difference. So disregard my uninformed comments. Lol.

Vibrato Thread

Actually i find it hard to drop the bending energy now. If i was to do a tremelo i have to give it considerable effort. Funny how it flips like that. A few months ago it was the other way round.

The vibrato/tremolo dichotomy is too simple.

There are three variables that you can use to put a rippling modulation in a sustained harmonica tone:

-- Changes in intensity

-- Changes in tone color

-- Changes in pitch

The throat can do intensity and pitch.

The tongue can do tone color and pitch.

The hands can do tone color and intensity

In the case of the throat, the glottis, or vocal folds that sit atop the windpipe, supply the changes in intensity. The tongue can add changes in pitch at the player's discretion. The change in tongue position is physically very subtle but has a strong effect. This can be enacted even on so-called non-bending notes, which can be depressed in pitch far enough to enhance the intensity modulation provided by the glottis.

I like that way of looking at it, Winslow.

I would add that the diaphragm can change intensity as well.

Greg -

I agree. I usually start with the diaphragm and work my way up through the glottis, tongue, and hands. I left it out in this instance because it doesn't do two things, which was the point of departure for joining the thread.
