This Hohner 64 chromonica has been for sale on my local Craigslist for quite some time now.

I've really been enjoying playing my 12 hole chromatic recently and I'd like to add a 16 hole model to my collection. This seller is a couple hours away from me, but part of me wants to make them a low offer and see if they'd be willing to mail it to me. The other rational part of me thinks it would be stupid to pay ANY money for an old, untested, used, harp that may end up costing a LOT of money to get into decent playable condition.

Any thoughts?

I would reach out to the guy and have an honest conversation with him. Ask him to call you on the phone or give you his phone number so you can call him. Then have him play the harmonica up and down, button in, button out. You'll be able to tell if it is worth buying. See if he will take less and mail it to you. The odds are if it has been listed for a while he will. I have listed several items on Craigslist over the years and it is pretty much universally expected that potential buyers (and sellers) will negotiate. If you are willing to pay him $100, offer him $80 and settle on $100. If the reeds are stuck or the windsavers buzz and rattle, politely explain that while it is a nice harp, in order to make it usable you are going to have to put some money in it to bring it up to speed. The seller probably inherited it from someone in his family who passed away or is a picker. The odds are that you know more about harps than he does and when you demonstrate that you know what you are talking about he may defer to your expertise. That's what I would do.

That sounds like very wise advice. Thanks Tom! I think I will try to initiate a phone conversation sometime soon.

I bet you will pay as much in repairs/tuning as you will for the harmonica. For 200 you can buy a new SCX 16 hole chro or an Eastop for probably less. You might get a deal on that used harp but you will get a headache in return. The case looks tip top

Yeah. That's kinda what I was figuring 6SN7. I'd only go for it if they are willing to let it go for really cheap, or if a phone conversation leads me to believe it is in good working order.

Connie (the seller) just emailed me back:

Hello, Sorry, I don’t do long distance calls. Looking at the harmonica’s for sale on the internet, I think that I have priced this fairly. There are several for sale $200+ although there is the one that seems to be the same for sale on e-bay. They are bidding and there are about 4 people going at it and right now it is priced at $23 and has 3d8h left to bid. The URL is:

Thanks for inquiring, Good Luck, Connie

EastTop chromatics have been getting pretty good recommendations on Slidemeister from those who have them. Rockin' Ron sells a new 16 hole Black and Gold 64 for $185, and the 12 hole for $150. There is also a $130 12 hole that is silver in color.

I haven't tried one yet, since I have already have plenty in C: a Hering 6164 and a 5148, a Hohner 270, and a Chrometta 12. Not to mention other keys of chromatic, both Hering and Hohner.

I am still tempted by the EastTop chromatics despite having so many. You can also get them from Danny G. directly at New Harmonica, too.
