I ran into an old recording of this fella, Polka Dot Slim. Has anyone ever heard of, or have any info on this harp player from the 60's ( I believe )

This was with the video:

Monroe Vincent as born December 19, 1919 in Woodville, MS., and was influenced by the harmonica playing of Sonny Boy Williamson I. Vincent made his debut in 1956 recording a single for Excello in Crowley, LA. as Vince Monroe. In 1957 he recorded over two dozen sides for Zynn in Crowley, but at the time the label only released two recordings. Some of these recordings were later issued by Flyright Records in England with Vincent billed as "Mr. Calhoun". Vincent returned to recording in 1965 and the following year waxing two singles for Instant & Apollo, respectively. Even after his recording career stalled, he remained a fixture on the New Orleans performing scene up until about 1976. It is believed that Vincent passed away in Oakland, CA. in April of 1982.

Very interesting. I've never heard of him. His singing, to my ears, has clearly been influenced, especially at the end of his phrases, by Howlin' Wolf, but his playing definitely has more SBW flavor: both Sonny Boy I and Sonny Boy II, in equal parts, with his own distinctive sound.

Fascinating find!

Have been hip to Polka Dot Slim since I started playing harmonica back in 1986. Ain't broke, Ain't hungry is one of my favorite all time blues tracks.

Downhome Delta Harmonica with Forrest City Joe & Polka Dot Slim is a great CD to add to any collection.

@Belfast Harper - Thanks ! His wiki only alluded to a couple of recordings. I found this and ordered it online.

The there is a problem with that CD, Forrest City Joe is so great that Polka Dot Slim doesn't get much play time.

You should also check out Chicago Down Home Harmonica Vol 1 and the Juicy Harmonica series (volumes 1 - 3) if you like that sort of rough down home sound.

It looks like my posts made it through the spam filter, I am not sure why the spam filter was eating them as they contained no websites or links.
