ECC83 is the European designation for 12Ax7. I don't know a lot about tubes, but I like and use JJs in my amps.
Anyway, JJ is now marketing a tube they call ECC 83MG. The JJ AX7 tubes I have been using are called ECC83S.
I was re-tubing a small Class A amp that has 2 preamp tubes. First I tried two ECC83S tubes and that was too gainy. So I put a 5751 in V1 and that was better, but the high end was still harsh, scratchy and a little fizzy. So I pulled the ECC83S and replaced it with an ECC83MG. WOW! Wonderful depth of tone with a less jagged high end while still preserving the tight overdrive or distortion you expect from this type of amp. This tube made everything sound richer and more musical.
Anyone else have any experience with these tubes? I'm certainly very favorably impressed.

Those ECC83's are 12AX7's that have short plates in them, which tend to make them sound much more trebly, the ECC803's are long plate versions that resembles a late 50's to mid 60's GE, which tends to have more mids and bottom end than what the short plate versions have and the ECC83MG's are somewhat more along the lines of a Tung Sol 12AX7, which is also a mid plate length tube (and along with the long plate NOS GE 12AX7's and mid 60's Mullard 12AX7's) are some of the BEST 12AX7 types being made. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Thanks, Bob. The Eurotubes website cautions that the ECC803s does not hold up well in combo amps. Since combo anps are all I have, I've always bought ECC83s tubes to use for 12AX7 applications. But I think I'm going to replace my ECC83s tubes with ECC83MG tubes because they sound so much better
