I've been thinking lately (watch out)... Playing blues harp, I obviously have a deep love for delta blues and all of the greats that took that sound to new heights in Chicago- but I also am a huge fan of the sound developed by those who stayed behind in the North Mississippi Hill Country. I love that sad, droning, yet danceable sound... Fred Mcdowell, Kimbrough, Burnside- up through contemporary folks like Lightning Malcolm, Cedric Burnside and the North Mississippi All-Stars.

Very rarely do you hear any harmonica- just some sparse stuff here and there. Fife seems to be the wind instrument of choice. Can the harp be an instrument that can go beyond simple chordal rhythms in this genre? Can anyone point me to any players/recordings that I may not be aware of? Any ideas regarding the approach to take with regard to playing harp in this context? It's such a different animal...

Edit: Just came across some amazing stuff by Adam playing in this style- wow.

Jason Ricci has a strong connection to the Hill Country, and he's featured on this cd with Cedric Burnside www.cdbaby.com/cd/cburnsidelmalcolm

Johnny Woods also springs to mind, he played with Fred McDowell and RL Burnside. Here he is with RL:

I can't think of much else either, I'd love to hear more.
