I recently bought an Ab harp from a local music store on the cheap from their NOS pile. After setting the gaps, it plays pretty good. A bit stiff, but I think it will loosen up in time.
It came in a red plastic case and has nails rather than screws holding the reed plates to the comb. All of my other Special 20s came in a gray case and use screws on the reed plates.
Anyone have any idea how old this might be?

That harp s likely from the 70's. Some time in the late 70's Hohner switched from using the pins to screws. If you ever decide you want to convert the harp to screws it is a very easy job to do. Use a punch to tap out the pins. Don't use too much force because you don't want to bend the plates. One precise wrap will do it. The pin will release from the draw plate and slide through the hole on the blow plate (just like a screw does). You can then replace the pins with the standard M1.6 screws that Hohner now uses on all their harps (except the MB 1896). If you have a tap, that is nice but it really isn't even necessary. The steel screws will self tap throught the soft brass plates. Just take your time and don't try to force it or else you will strip the threads. You may have to get the screws started then back them out a little and cut the threads in the hole a little at a time. But overall, it is a very easy job. ---------- Tom Halchak www.BlueMoonHarmonicas.com
