I really want to find someone I can take a private harp lesson with. Does anyone know of a Good Harp Teacher in the Delaware/Philly area? I really want some Pro feedback and guidance on my playing. I think the internet "do it yourself" method is only going to get me so far. And I likely am developing bad habits already. I need Professional help. ( In more ways than one. )

Thanks

If it has to be a pro teacher in Philly I highly recommend Emile D'Amico. Seth Holtzman also in Philly area is a good choice. Take a few lessons with both and decide who's teaching is a better fit for you.

Make the Trip to Jersey for a lesson with Dennis Gruenling, or see if you can arrange for a lesson when he's closer to you for a gig.

Alternatively you could look into Skype lessons. They aren't exactly the same as in person but they are darn close and open up a bunch of options not previously available.

Thanks Guys.

Ryan I'll look into those guys thanks.
I have been wanting to do skype lessons with a few different teachers, mainly Shellist and Ricci, but I dont have a computer. I use my phone for everything. I think after a few live lessons I'll look into getting one and will be good to try skype, but I really want somebody to be able to actually see my playing in person. I feel they could help much more with the little things that could be missed on skype.

LSB You know I had thought about Dennis, but I thought he was up in NYC. Wonder how far he is into Jersey? That's a great idea, I'll msg him on FB and see if I can maybe line something up.

The first answer of Emile D'amico and Seth Holtzman are spot on.

Seth is a very experienced teacher, and a plain nice guy.

Emile ,I believe is on here as digs blues, but I could be wrong

I live in sw center city . You are always welcome over .

You could also go to Mikey Junior's Sunday jam . Tons of harp players there including Mikey Junior's teacher, but his name escapes me .

Joe Becton , one of philly's most important harmonica players, goes there a lot too .

Oh,also ,if you have any connection with Penn, look up Samuel Martin from the french Dept.
He is a world class player ,perhaps the best I have ever seen.

Hello, forum! My name is Greg. I thought I'd share a video that seconds Shakey's recommendation of Samuel Martin, at least for a listen.

Thanks Shakey. You know i thought of Diggs aswell. I thought i remembered him saying he taught harp. I ll also look into Seth. His name is Very familiar, I'm sure I've ran into him at some point.

I really tried to make it to that moonshine philly gig you did. But my work hours, and distance from everything fun, put a damper in my social life these days ... lol. Heard it was a great show.

Swash thanks for that video. Fantastic.

Gold .. i don't not believe guyger does any teaching. Unless you count watching him play. 8^)

I know he used to teach. If you can find his dvd its a good one
He used to play at Kennys on County Line road regularly but I think that place changed hands. Also some places in Mew Hope
I would love to watch Steve on a regular basis-his tone is 2nd to nione
I only get back up to Philly once a year so not up on the scene.

If you get lessons from Steh Holzman, please say hi for me!!! We are old running buddies and I've known him since the mid 70's. Terrific player and I've traded all sorts of things from him.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of Mr. Holtzman?
I found an email address for him, but he has yet to get back to me. So I'm not sure if it's valid.

Thanks

Thanks Diggs. Ill email you and we can talk further.

Seth Holzman info:

Cell Tel.: 610-724-3168
Email: zepharpo@aol.com

Emile D'Amico info:

Email: oatss_oatflakes@yahoo.com

If we could think of a place to hold it could set up a meetup group and schedule harmonica meetings like once a month, I bet a bunch would be interested. Issue is finding a place.

I give harmonica lessons and I'm often in Center City and the Chestnut Hill/Germantown area. I have recently obtained my BM in music education and can teach theory as well.

I also work on harmonicas such as replacing reeds, tuning, and for clean overblows.

I agree with what everyone has posted so far. The Twisted Tail is a lot of fun and harmonica friendly. That's where I met RyanMortos. I've also just sat in with one of Seth's bands. Really great player.

Let's start up another harmonica club in Philly!

Thanks Ryan, your the man.

Thats the email I used for him.

I would love to be a part of such a group. But to be honest, unless the group met on the weekends, I would likely not be able to attend very often. I have a hard time just getting out to see shows and goto jams.

The weekend thing wouldnt work for anyone else im sure. Thats when most players have gigs. If it were closer to me, It might be easier to get out too.

Other clubs I have been in use VFWs alot. Or Rod and Gun clubs, Private Bars, etc.

VFWs are usually very open to having folks hold meetings. Just food for thought.
