Danny Russo, a legendary NYC player who recorded with Victoria Spivey on the Spivey label, shows up in this video, as audio. Start at the 8:39 point. He's a badass. If you don't recognize the name, you should--and will, after this:

I crossed paths with Danny a handful of times. He was playing great, great traditional blues in NYC in the 1970s.

There's literally NOTHING by Danny on YouTube. So this is a find. He's on several Spivey records.

Not many (any?) times I can say somebody had Big Foot Chester's tone but there it was. Maybe Hubert in the house helped. Wow.

Got to see Danny one night at Terra Blues with Steve Guyger and Gene Carpenter-one of the best shows I have ever seen without question-a complete lesson in tone.

I first met Danny back in 1975 while I was at Paul's Mall in Boston checking out Muddy Waters and we became good friends for a number of years. He always had the Wolf and Cotton sound better than anyone else I ever met, bar none.

Danny and I use to play harp together in the cab he drove in NYC. He would park it in front of Dan Lynch's as we both were on the outs with that scene. I loved his playing but sadly this was all pre computer days so very little is out on him. Walter

I've been out of touch with him for about 10 years and from what I've heard from some musician friends of mine from NYC is that he's had some problems and is no longer playing.

Bob: Thanks for that update and I am sorry to hear that. I hope he is ok. Quiting the music scene can often be a sign of good health! walter
