I just got home from SPAH in San Antonio. It was a great time and I am very much sleep deprived. SPAH is a tremendous experience. I imagine that it is a bit different for each attendee depending on what brought them there. Most are there to participate in the workshops, jam sessions and enjoy the music. Some are there to perform. Some are there to teach. Often it is a combination of two or more of the above. And then there are …………………………. the Vendors. Other than the Big 3 – Hohner, Seydel and Suzuki, who have the biggest booths and have a staff of people to man them, the rest of us are one or two man operations who camp out in our little corner of SPAH chatting with customers, explaining our wares and answering questions. For the past few years Blue Moon Harmonicas, Blows Me Away Productions (Greg Heumann) and Lone Wolf Blues Company (Randy Landry and Nathan Heck) have been hanging together at SPAH. This year we were joined by The Harmonica Lady – Nedra Russ and her guitar playing husband Julio Guerra. Fortunately, the SPAH attendees are so supportive (Thank you very much!) that we stay crazy busy and rarely have time to be bored (much less take a break to eat or visit the facilities). That said, here is an impromptu jam session that broke out during a rare lull in the activity.

Hey guys! Great job.

These small outfits are a major boost to our community. Nothing like this was around when I started.

Nice to share the space with you, Greg, Nedra, Randy & Nathan, Tom. Everyone had some cool new stuff. Greg scored big with his Bulletini! It was good to have first visits from a couple of Chinese harmonica companies as vendors too, Easttop and Golden Bird. I hope SPAH books some of the top Asian players and groups in the future - I think that kind of cross fertilization between the harmonica scenes in the West and East will be good for everybody.
