Not the ones you open the backs on and perhaps powder coat or gold plate, but when you record someone else's song.

I have been using Reverbnation and there is a little box you check that says you certify that you own or have licensed all rights to the recording you are about to post. I realize that no one is likely to come after me for my podunk recordings that might get heard by 10 people, but what if you were at a bit higher level and wanted to put a cover up? How would you go about this legally? Can anyone point me to a good primer on this aspect of the music industry?
How long does it take songs to move into the public domain? I would expect that Bach or Steven Foster are fair game, but probably not any living artist. How does one determine the copyright status of a work?

I still don't have a proper answer, but when I published my "Game of Thrones" OST main theme cover youtube added some ads to cover my using of Ramin Djawadi's composition. And I am happy with it.

I saw some references to a copyright lasting 70 years after the death of the writer. I also see references to renewals. This seems to be a very complex subject.

I checked out Boris' cover. It is very well done and enjoyable to listen to, even though I am not familiar with Game of Thrones. The video editing is nice giving hints into the process of creating the work. I note that artwork from Game of Thrones was also used, further complicating the copyright issue.

I also ran across and interesting
service that will get you the appropriate permissions for a fee, and the fee is lower than I expected, under $20 for a licence to make 50 CD's and a similar price for low quantities of streaming audio. Costs go up with number of copies or streams. I have no idea whether this company is legit, but the price is low enough that if I get a bit better and start to attract and audience, I might consider licencing a cover and posting it on Reverbnation.
