Hi all,
During a recent clear out I found a JT30 in a box in the cellar that contains the following element
Astatic 111 (red ink)
It sounds GREAT and is still very strong. I am aware that it is a crystal in the vein of the 151 but know nothing else about it. Age, when built, comparisons to other crystals, which mics it came in?
Any help would be appreciated.
One thing I have learnt - I really should keep a better overview of my equipment!

I think you can find a history of Astatic elements at http://www.jt30.com ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

I think that may be the predecessor to the MC-151. If it had said MC-101, then that would be a crystal element without the midrange presence rise that the MC-151 has. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Think you might be right Bob. Strange that I can't find much info about it though. A friend who specialises in elements reckons it is late 40s/early 50s. R

Most likely it's from that time period. I once checked out a JT30 from the mid 50's back in the mid 80's with my real '59 Bassman and it was so hot, I damned near couldn't turn the amp at all. Years later, I found out the reason why they were so hot was because the bottom end response was ridiculously loud and on a real Bassman, if you used those, never turn the bass higher than 6 or 7. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Theres a you tube video mentions this element in a T3 mic google "Astatic T-3 Chrome Bullet Harp Mic with MC-111 Crystal Element" should find it.He says he needs to check what element is in the mic so I guess he did that and uploaded it. He says its crystal. A couple of other references on the net describing as a crystal also with one stating a date code of 926....26 week of 39 or 49 more likely. I have a dead MC101 from 1941 - you'd like to think that maybe there was a semi sequential numbering going on but maybe not eh! Its old and it sounds cool so that's the main thing ...nice to have a functioning relic.

Thanks for the info on the date code. Mine doesn't have one but still it confirms the approximate age. BR R
