I've been listening to a lot of Paul DeLay recently. It's taken me a while to 'get' him, but now I'm hooked. I know we've had Paul DeLay appreciation threads before, but I've never seen the following video called out, so I'd like to do that now. It really touches me, and I hope you enjoy it too.
That clip is a great find! You can hear deLay's wonderful style and phrasing already fully developed even at this early stage of his career. And yes, as far as we know, he used stock harps. He was known to use Big Rivers, actually, when they appeared on the market. Thanks for posting.
Not sure about the other players but the two guitar players are still two of the best in the Northwest. Jim "The Italian Chainsaw" Mesi and Lloyd Jones. Just thought I'd give them some love.
Thanks bluebird. I've never seen that video and I'm from Portland. Delay was in his 20's. Note Lloyd Jones, who did the first solo, and Jim Mesi, both still very active in the Portland blues scene. In fact Jones will be performing in the upcoming Waterfront Blues Festival. Although it looks like DeLay is playing a marine band, he was a Big River player in the end, and I doubt he ever did any mods. BTW, that is not a muddy sounding mic, it sounds great. Unless of course you like the screeching sound of Popper.
Yes Pluto...the evidence of ones ears should be sufficient, but I added some quote marks just to be clear. We had someone here recently, intent on tarring all bullets with the same brush.
i consider the fact that he is using a crystal jt 30 a major component of his sound.also the marine band seems to get a very "brassy" tone. not sure what amp he is using but, it looks similar to james cotton's amp on the video clip of.... i got my mojo working.
