So now I have a Kinder AFB+, a Squeal Killer, and a calibrated decibel meter...seems like I have all the ingredients for a video that would provide a serious comparison between the two devices. Maybe I'll be able to make the video in conjunction with my neighbor who has a recording studio so the audio quality would be meaningful. First impressions from some messing around with my Bassman are that the Kinder is somewhat more effective, but I'm not sure I would say it's $100 more effective. Hopefully I can find the time to work on the video soon...

I think you will find in BOTH cases that, the amp will be much easier to control as you approach the feedback threshold, meaning you can get more useful volume out of it - but you probably WON'T be able to get much more real volume. Remember it takes 10x the power to double the volume (+10dB).
Due the difficulty in PLAYING consistently (within a dB or two) I think you'll find it hard to see meaningful results.
What you might need is a device like this: https://www.facebook.com/BlowsMeAwayProductions/videos/1345655782127340/ to provide a totally consistent harp/mic setup.
I could loan it to you if you want to pay shipping..... ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

Sounds interesting to me. I am looking forward to the results. Thanks for posting things like this, it's all interesting, what the tools.

How about simply using re-amping to play the identical mic signal through both setups?

@ Greg: that's a very cool testing setup you made there. I would do the decibel meter test more along the lines of playing the same lick(s) with a handheld mic to better simulate a performance situation, but I do admire your scientific rigor in testing your elements. :-)
@ MTG: I like the scientific approach. At the same time, with re-amping, I think that would eliminate the possibility for creating feedback with the subsequent tests because I would then just be playing a pre-recorded signal through the amp, with no potential for any feedback loops to start. Am I thinking about this the right way?

You'd need to put the mic and the reamped signal into a two-channel mixer, with the output of that into the Kinder/Squeal Killer, then hold the mic cupped against your face in playing position.
Even then, you'd have to be precise with the levels, and it will only tell you what happens in that room, your mics and your cupping, but you could take a range of results for distance, angle etc.
I'm not sure using Greg's device would give the right comparison, because how you hold the mic has an effect on how it feeds back. When I see demos where someone simply dangles a mic freely near an amp, it's not the whole story.

Have any of you compared the Lone Wolf Harp Shield with the Kinder and Squeal Killer?
