Has anyone used or modeled their harp case on an old timey TV Repairman's tube caddy/tool box? Having been passed down from his grandfather, an aquaintance was happy to part with two of them along with tubes, jigs & manuals in exchange for testing and arranging fair market sale of the remaining equipment.
One of my first impressions upon opening them was how easily they could be modified or scaled down to become harp cases. One has an RCA logo and the other is slightly smaller with a GE logo. Each are nearly identical in design and can be opened level on either side while maintaining a solid center of balance. This is a handy feature when there is limited footprint space on stage. You can find them on eBay for a good price.
[I am always amazed at what the designers of old were able to come up with using pencils, paper and slide rules. Ironically, I'm converting my computer workshop for this new interest.]

I'd be wary of the tube assortment. I would expect the inventory to have been picked over.
When I was in grade school I picked parts for an auto wrecker. He kindly allowed me to strip all the radios of their tubes. I filled a 4 cu ft box with tubes that had no use in 120v TVs (with rare exception). One might run into a similar situation with regard to audio tubes by going in blind like I did.

Hmm, I probably have eight or so of those tube caddies. Cool idea! Problem is, my old harp case may outlast me and I don't need two.

Your title just gave me an idea. If you converted a cello case to a harp case, You might get less resistance when you ask if you can sit in with other musicians. There would be hell to pay when you opened the case and they saw it was full of harps though. Many folks would rather see a Tommy gun!
