I removed the element of a Akai DM13, all the soldering is OK, I doble check for it, but I get a strange result.

My other Akai DM13 (modded whit a VC and a Screw on connector) has a little more output, but much more bass.

(+) wire goes to the center of the male connector at the botom of the mic, and the (-) wire is secured using the presion of the grill against the shell. Is a loose wire, but in there get in touch whit the shell for ground and the grill lock him down.

What do you think?

I think the neg (-) needs to be terminated better. I'm not sure what kind of connectors you got going on exactly, but loose neutral or grounded conductor can be the cause of the loss of that punch. One of many causes. I think you likely need a gasket aswell.

Ive been interested in seeing if I could fit a DM13 element into my Shaker Madcat. The madcat element is pretty weak. But the mic shape is killer.

Ive seen one put into the bulletini shell. I thought that was interesting.

Do you mean those plastic things in the wire? those are for securing the soldering, I put those after re do the soldering and making shure that are good.

More testing whit the mics:

The original akai has a huge bottom end when I cup hard, but this one, in the jt30 shell, has almost zero, is all mids.

Zab you have to embed it.

Do this minus the '.'

<.I.M.G. S.R.C.=." PASTE WEBSITE HERE "./.>. <./.a.>

I think that's right.

The info is on the forum FAQ on the right under blues harp furum link.

Nevermind ... ill do it for you.

Im talking about the blue wire which you are tucking between the shell and grill. I would attempt to terminate it to the connector. This will give you a better ground.

Also there is air inside the shell. Try packing around it with something. And make a gasket to seal it to the grill. Your cupping the bullet, but not the element.

Know what i mean. If you seal the element in there right, it should sound ok uncupped. Create an artificial cup of the element by filling the shell. And adding a gasket.

I would try it with something non permanent, just to see how it will work best. Then spray foam that bad boy in there. That should work pretty good. And the only time you ll likely take it apart is if the element his bad. Then you just cut it all out.

This is a dynamic element. What matters is how you are mounting it. It needs a gasket that provides a nearly airtight seal between the front and the rear of the element - or you will get .... very poor bass response.

Strange things continue to happen.

I installed today a 61` 99B86 Cm into a Universal 312 shell (whit VC) and it sounded exactly like the Akai: no bass at all. I thought that maybe the VC is the problem, so I put the CM into a turner shell, and it was the same, no bass at all. Then I remembered that I use to have another CM, that was damage when my guitar player drop it to the floor. Then, that old CM sounded just like this, low output and no bass. So I decided to test this old CM to see if they have the same problem. I installed into the Turner, and it works!! Strong and powerfull! (niether CM has a gasket, but the old one does have a good bottom end, so is not the lack of gasket)

I am clueless of what is happening, I have two mics whit the same problem (low output and no bass) but they are different elements, diferents shells, and the one element that I know it was bad, now it works.

I have builded many mics in the past, I have experience whit this, I am not an expert, but I know how to soldier.

What I am doig wrong?

Idk im no expert either. Sounds like either a grounding issue. Or maybe the xfmrs on the element? Idk. Im just guessing really.

But i want to order a pot for my Akai mic projects. What size did you use?

you're building gasket-free?
I'd take the advice of the very well-respected professional mic builder who advised you to use gaskets. I expect you'll have more consistent results.

If I were living in USA, sure I would put gaskets in all of mic mics, but I dont live in USA, so is not an option right now.

I do have a few gasket from dead element in old mics that I bought over the years, but no of those fit a CM.

The issue is not for the lack of gasket (whitout gasket, one CM works fine and the other not). I am the issue, ther must be something that I am doing wrong. I check polaritys, they are all right, I double cheked the soldering.

I am clueless

sounds like an impedance mismatch.
also what value is the volume pot?

The VC on the Universal shell is 250k B.

I am doing all my test and re test now into a turner CX shell, whit no VC, but the same result.

you could try an inline matching transformer.

99B86 is high impedance; no impedance matching transformer required. I ship gaskets all over the world. If there is an air leak between front of element and back you WILL lose bass response. There is no other reasonable explanation unless you just have bad luck with bad elements. There are only 2 wires to connect and it doesn't really matter which is which.

Cut the Akia DM13 housing about an inch below the chrome screw on top. Put the element back in the housing and then make a gasket to hold it in the JT 30. Place a light piece of cloth between the JT 30 grill and the DM13 grill and put the Dm13 right up against the cloth. It has to be gasketed so no sound gets behind the DM13!
That should work!

Chromatic .. that's a pretty good idea. I want to get a bulletini shell and try that.

I will try that Chromaticblues- Any idea about a DIY gasket?

Greg, maybe you are right, maybe is a bad element that CM. I will continue to try, because it cost me $150, and that is a lot of money down here.

In the future, I will only buy from the big guys. Is a little more money, but you can be sure that the element is not the problem.

I haven't had one of those housings in 15 years so I don't remember how element sits in there? I use Astatic 200's and shure 440's. Any thick piece of rubber will do. Just measure the outer diameter of the original gasket and the diameter of the Dm13. Then just cut to fit. It has to be air tight! You can use silicon at the contact points to seal it up. I bought a hot glue gun. I don't use it on any of mics now, but I have in the past when I was doing stuff just like what your doing. It worked great!

Here's what i do for gaskets.
Buy a small sheet of very light but dense black foam about quarter inch(5-8mm) thick.Put the empty shell into a vise with the opening facing up,then heat it with a hot air gun, place a decent size piece of the foam onto the shell and then put something heavy like a couple of books onto the foam.leave it for an hour or two.
The foam will have a nice deep indent in it which is easy to cut out and make a perfect fit.
For the element itself i have found a metal washer that is the same size as a C/M so i heat it to very hot and place it within the already cut out gasket, again you get a nice template for cutting out.
I have used this method to fit a small dynamic element into a bullet (smaller washer)
The sheets are about 2 square feet so you have plenty of room to practice doing it.

Update:

I found a rubber "thing" that works great for a gasket on that akai element. I installed into a shell, all the wiring is OK, teted and... the same. Low output, better bass response yes, but still low output.

Still clueless.

I found a gasket fo my "New" CM, is not a perfect fit, but is a 90% fit. It came from an jt30 knock off thay a guy send me to see what was the problem whit his mic (dead cristal). Anyway, I tested the cm whit this gasket, and it is the same, low ouptut, no bass. I did notice that when I blow hard (whit a tight cup) there was a volume increase, like if something was loose inside the element and blowing hard fix it. So, it seems that I bought an expensive dead element.

Then I tested my "old" CM, the one that I thought it was dead time ago, And whit the gasket, it is full!.

1/3 problems solve. If only I can figure it out the problem whit the akai, that would be great.
