We used the same thing when making cabinets when i was a sound tech. We sprayed them black.
We also used scotch gaurd to spray the speaker cones to help resist moisture for outdoor events. ---------- "THE BLUES IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE! "

i will need to paint this as well or it will rust. lots of spray paint around here.
scothguard.... first i've heard that. i have heard of using fabric softener. rumor has it that is what jensen did to the p10r-f speaker to make it sound more broken in. The P10R-F was designed by the Jensen factory in cooperation with Fender® for the reissue of the Fender ’57 Bandmaster® and the 20th Anniversary Vibro King®. The goal was to design a P10R speaker with a more broken-in, worn sound straight out of the box. The P10R-F has a smooth, round top end and a full-bodied low end response, it distorts at lower levels; and still maintains the vintage classic tonalities of the legendary P10R.

That material is known as expanded metal and it can be had in stainless if you don't want to paint it. You can also get other shapes and size down to almost cloth like. Here is one supplier I found on line, it shows you the possibilities, though I doubt they sell small quantities.

looks good--did u use little rubber gaskets to attach it, to push it out away from cone?-------
I had a mouse climb out of my spkr cabinet in a bar--I heard all these people lafin, saw a mouse go across the floor---on the break they told it jumped out of my little port---since then I put a tightly meshed wire in there

How is it secured to the amp and how do you keep it from rattling?

damn harpaholic, nothing gets past you.
it is not secured to the cab. i haven't got that far. the 4 screws that hold the speaker need to first be painted. i also should paint the grill so it does not rust. i will simply secure the "grill" with 4 screws. hopefully it will not rattle. i plan on using this cab with my champ because it has a small rattle that is bugging the heck out of me. the speaker is attached to a baffle, so i do not have any issues with the cone. if i catch a mouse anywhere near this thing, i will take off the grill and roast the little rodent.
my champ is getting a hole drilled into the chassis to install a 1/4 jack then the tranny will provide a 8 ohm tap to match the impedance. i can then switch back and forth between the 8 inch 4 ohm speaker and the 10 inch 8 ohm speaker.

You have to have some sort of rubber between the grill and the cabinet. I used a pre glued rubber band you use to prevent wind blowing trough the windows and doors.

My old 30 watt had a big steel grill kinda like that. I put some fabric under it which was good. To stretch it tight while I was attaching the grill to the cab I just used a glue stick in the metal. That held the fabric while I got the screws in place. Once the grill was screwed down it held the fabric looking tidy by itself.. The wire was not quite as far (edit: "fat" I meant) as yours though. Had it been, I might have gone for Garry's approach with the fabric on the outside. Those Vox grills are really pretty full on in your face.

i painted the grill black, i put rubber washers on the screws... ended up taking them off. should be fine with out them. only thing left to do is run a 8 ohm tap on the champ to match the speaker
