Sam Hinton was one of the greatest non-blues diatonic harmonica players over to have touched his lips (and tongue) to a short harp.
Many folks don't know that the popular jazz pianist/singer, George Winston, is also an accomplished harmonica player and a student/disciple of Sam Hinton.
In addition to his musical virtuosity Sam was a renowned marine biologist and a linchpin of the San Diego folk music scene. In fact, the San Diego Folk Festival is aptly named after him. There used to be an extensive web site dedicated to Sam but it seems to be no longer (samhinton.org). Too bad as his accomplishments and achievements were many and notable.
Every serious diatonic tongue blocker, regardless of their preferred musical genre is duty-bound to study Sam's work closely. Those Youtube lessons are a great start.
Fortunately, a CD that used to be available exclusively on that web site is still available, now on Amazon and elsewhere. It's packed with 60 some of his songs and narratives.
The esteemed Mr Hinton. That guy truly was a renaissance man. When I was but a wee lad, I spent all my free time when I wasn;t in the Pacific Ocean hanging around the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and picking up odd jobs helping grad students set up their hardware, feeding the fish, and generally being a grubby little nuisance. Mr Hinton would show up and it was like a major celebrity was in the house. He had been the curator of the Aquarium right after WWII and was a rock-star when he arrived. He was truly an inspiration to a wide-eyed beach kid.
