Oh Mr. Heathen, donor reeds work just fine. I use used reeds all the time, just have to make sure you are using one that isn't going to fracture soon. There are only a few reeds that become fractured--4 and 5 draw, 4,7, and 9 blow. Most of the rest never get broken. I do see 6 blow on valved diatonics tho . . .

Yea i suppose all people aren't mechanically inclined. The best thing i can suggest for shaping reeds (without turning this into a huge conversation) is a thin feeler guage(about .004ish), and a metal pick (a toothpick will work).
For tuning i use a super thin guage ( about .00025), a battery engraver, a plinker (made from a .004ish feeler gyage) and a jewlers file.
The point is when your adjusting the reeds you should use something to support them. Atleast until you get the feel for how much pressure/force to use. Watch a few videos on the subject if you haven't already. Kinya pollard is the man. Maybe R. SLEIGHS hot rod book can help you out.
There really is a bit of satisfaction when you get your first harp playing really well. I couldn't imagine only playing OOTB harps. ---------- "Trust Those Who Seek The Truth. Doubt Those Who Say They Have Found It."

@Heathen Sorry, individual reeds are not available to the public--and I am running out of certain ones for repairs here at Suzuki, and having to use replacement reed plates. Not a bad solution . . . Waiting on a delivery from Japan later this month, hopefully lots of individual draw 5 reeds!

O.K. I'm going off topic here..., If a draw bend is the compromise/combination of the tones produced by the blow and draw reeds working together, what are you getting from a 5 draw bend other than cracked reeds?

There is a note, almost the same as 5 blow, produced by the draw bend on 5. But I certainly don't need that note!

On 2 occasions I have bought a batch of harmonicas off ebay with most of them having fractured 5 draw reeds. One batch of these constitutes my entire (sans 1 Session Steel in A) collection of Seydels. New reed plates, in low keys, now.

Donor Reeds? I mentioned these harps as a lot in another thread. My buddy decided to break the lot into logical groups:
